The G-Shock was born in 1983 out of a seemingly impossible challenge: Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe wanted to create a watch that could withstand a fall from the third floor without breaking. Three years and 200 prototypes later, the DW-5000C was launched. Four decades on, the G-Shock remains the global benchmark for rugged watches.
The key structural feature of the G-Shock is the floating quartz module: the mechanism is not fixed directly to the case, but is suspended within a resin structure that absorbs impacts before they reach the movement. Combined with the case’s perimeter protection and genuine (rather than theoretical) water resistance to 200 metres, the result is a watch that has survived conditions that would destroy any other.
The GM-2100 CasiOak is the most successful modern evolution: it retains all the reliability of a G-Shock but replaces the resin case with a metal one, giving it a premium look reminiscent of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. At €169, it is probably the best-looking watch for the money on the market today.
